“Thanksgrieving” Ceremony in Vietnam

On November 28, a day that was supposed to be Thanksgiving in the United States, 7 local animal advocates in Vietnam gathered (with 1 joining on video call from afar) for an intimate ceremony to commemorate the 46 million turkeys killed just on this day alone as part of most American families’ celebration.

Even though Thanksgiving is not a holiday in Vietnam, we took this occasion to educate ourselves on world events that have an immense impact on animals, as well as to create our own tradition surrounding giving thanks and give new meaning to a day that has historically marked so much human and nonhuman suffering. One advocate cleverly named our memorial “Thanksgrieving,” with the hope that in the future, we would no longer need to grieve but would be able to truly celebrate and give thanks.

In Vietnam, events like this have proven to be valuable as a community-building tool and a reminder to all participants of why we do what we do–as participants wrote afterwards, “Good friends, good food, and a meaningful action,” and “Thanks all for creating an educational and meaningful evening together.”

We look forward to exploring more creative ways to spice up our community meet-ups!
